COLOMBO (News 1st); The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer-Hamdy, urged security services to understand the frustration of citizens who spend hours in long queues and to exercise restraint in the use of strength.
In a tweet, the UN Resident Coordinator called on authorities to investigate any excessive use of force.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung had also urged authorities to show restraint in these difficult circumstances.
Additionally, she stressed that any excessive use of force should be promptly investigated.
Troubled by images of violence in petrol queues, involving the police and the army. I urge the security services to understand the frustration of citizens who spend hours in long queues and to exercise restraint in the use of force. As gas lines and power cuts increase, tensions naturally increase as well. But the overflow will not meet SL’s urgent needs. I urge the authorities to exercise restraint in these difficult circumstances. Any excessive use of force must be promptly investigated.
