Skip the big box stores to support local businesses during Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday is back in full swing in Midland.

Perch is hosting the third annual Shop Hop Small Business Saturday event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday at multiple locations across Midland. Perch owner Jaime Cole said most participating businesses will be offering special sales and drinks during the event.

“In the past, about six stores participated, but now we’re up to eight,” she said. “We only do this in three different malls, so it would be easier for customers to get around participating stores.”

Eight locally owned Midland stores will participate in three malls. The event will allow participants to win prizes worth over $500 at each store when they collect a game card at their first stop, then get a stamp at each store and finally hand in their card at their last stop. Velvet Mesquite Designs, Boutique Estilo, Sgt. Pepper’s and Bird Box have all moved to new premises within the last year.

“The Midlanders have been amazing in reaching out and looking after us during the pandemic,” she said. “Before opening the shop three years ago, I had never done retail and we opened in 2019 before everything closed. People have gone above and beyond to support local businesses.”

Participating stores include: Perch at 2040 W. Cuthbert Ave., Suite A; Boutique Estilo Boutique at 2034 W. Cuthbert Ave.; Far West Coffee at 2040 W. Cuthbert Ave.; Notable at 2101 W. Wadley Ave.; Bird Box Gifts at 3211 W. Wadley Ave.; Velvet Mesquite Designs at 3211 W. Wadley Ave.; sergeant. Pepper’s at 2101 W. Wadley Ave., Suite 24 and Posh Pony Boutique 3211 Wadley Ave. 11B.

Perch is offering a sale for paint by number kit sets and has pop-up christmas trees in stock which went viral when she posted how to put them on. She brings Hops and Bubbles, which will serve a signature cocktail, and Simply Jane Boutique will park outside with their latest styles.

Velvet Mesquite Designs recently moved from the Micro Market store to the Imperial Mall. Owner Elizabeth Resch said she loves the spacious new shop, which has allowed her to expand merchandise and flower options, including a dry flower bar.

“All of the brands we offer are still small businesses and mostly women-owned businesses,” Resch said. “We have clothes now, but they’re super neat since we only have one rack. We are not trying to have a clothing store but we are trying to cater to every aspect of a person.

Velvet Mesquite Designs will be offering beverages during small business shopping hours on Saturday. Resch said she is still waiting to see if it will be warm or cold to offer either a cider or a cold winter sangria. The store will also offer gift wrapping services on Saturday. Merchandise will be 30% off all apparel, 20% off Christmas items and 10% off personal care gifts.

sergeant. Pepper’s has added a kitchen to its new space, which Sarah Babbel, owner of the I’d Rather Be Baking business, will use for special classes and to cook special orders during the week. sergeant. Pepper owner Elizabeth Smith said it was an easy decision to add a kitchen to the new, expanded store.

“I met Elizabeth when I was looking for my own space, where there was a vacant spot near her old store,” Babbel said. “I was new to Midland and didn’t really know the area so I went to ask him about the area. … We understood that our dream was a bit the same at that time.

“I wanted to start offering more cooking and baking classes when I moved into a bigger space,” Smith said. “We met about a year and a half ago. We will bring in different chefs and bakers to teach. Sarah will take many baking classes and will also use the space to cook on a daily basis.

Smith said the company will have promotions and sales, while Babbel teaches 30-minute mini-courses on decorating-focused cupcakes throughout the day. Courses available through December can be found at Sgt. Pepper’s website https://www.sgtpeppersmidland.com/. Customers can also request a ready-made course to plan a private party.

sergeant. Pepper’s will have a grand opening of the new location at 3200 N. Garfield St. at 12:30 p.m. on December 4.

Found Furnishings is not participating in the Shop Hop but will have a Mama’s’ Mazin Mustard pop-up in store this Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. The boutique will also have a sale and giveaway at 428 Andrews Highway.
