Rene Meulensteen identifies key Erik ten Hag trait as Manchester United manager prepares for work

A former Manchester United assistant has named a key strength in Erik ten Hag ahead of his arrival as manager.

Ten Hag was announced as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor last month. The 52-year-old will see out the current campaign with Ajax before arriving at Old Trafford this summer.

The Dutchman has a big task ahead to solve the problems at United. The Reds are in danger of missing out on the Champions League after a disappointing campaign at the Theater of Dreams.

However, speaking about the Training Ground Guru Podcast, Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant Rene Meulensteen has backed the current Ajax player to succeed at Manchester. He explained: “I know him.

“I went to visit him in Munich when he was there, working as an assistant with Guardiola and spent a week with him there. It’s no surprise that he eventually wanted to make his own thing.

“It doesn’t matter if you bring an experienced or inexperienced guy to Man United, he’ll have his challenges and I’m sure he’s the kind of guy who will have thought about it and thought about it. He’ll know exactly where United are.

“What he has is a very strong way of how he likes teams to play and I think he has the right way of getting that across. First of all, make sure you have the right people to do it.

“He has to restore a level of trust and confidence, not only in the players but in the fans, in everyone. Give him the time, give him the support.

“And when you get a series of results, the confidence will come back.”
