Regional Program Manager – West and Central Africa – Kenya


Under the supervision of the Regional Director, the Regional Program Manager provides strategic support and oversight on a variety of departmental tasks, including project oversight, management of senior field staff, donor reporting, relations with donors, proposal development and communications. The Regional Program Manager is responsible for management level support for a variety of projects within the Africa Program Management Unit (PMU). They are responsible for overseeing all aspects of implementation and business development in a clearly defined sub-region: West and Central Africa. This means that they supervise Country Directors, Heads of Party and Project Managers and have the authority to make decisions and resolve issues with headquarters teams in the sub-region. The Regional Program Manager may also act as the PMU Manager in the short term absence of the Regional Director for Africa.


Internews has US offices in Arcata, California and Washington, D.C. and regional offices in Kenya, Liberia and Mali that support a hybrid workforce with staff working remotely, entirely from office or partially remotely. Ultimately, this position can work remotely from the United States or West Africa. Applicants based near an Internews office may also work wholly or partially at the office. DAILY TASKS will include:

  • Oversee the operations of country programs or part of these programs in West and Central African countries.
  • Directly manage, coordinate and evaluate Country Directors, Party Leaders, Project Managers, Senior Field Managers and other Internews employees in this sub-region in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws . This includes managing country leads and project managers in the West and Central Africa region, meeting weekly with them, setting goals, conducting reviews, etc.
  • Provide programmatic development and project support for PMU Africa, including procurement, recruitment of international staff and international consultants, writing and editing of key documents, and oversight of sub-grants.
  • Ensure that all program deliverables are on track and meet high quality standards in the sub-region.
  • Assist program units with short-term program tasks, including office set-up, administration, troubleshooting, evaluations and donor meetings, etc. This may involve field trips.
  • Collaborate on project assessments and surveys, and assist with other project deliverables and reports as needed, including onboarding consultants and drafting SOWs.
  • Support local program unit partners in proposal development, fundraising and organizational development.
  • Check and edit quarterly reports and ensure they are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Maintain high-level contacts with current and potential donors and program partners.
  • Responsible for business development in West and Central Africa. This includes meeting with donors, following up on business opportunities, partnering with local and international organizations, designing projects, writing proposals and following up.
  • Write reports and proposals for donors.
  • Attend meetings, roundtables and other events on behalf of the Africa Program Unit when needed.
  • Participate in advocacy and communication activities to maintain high visibility of Internews activities in Africa.
  • Write and edit web stories.
  • Understand and demonstrate its commitment to respect Internews core values.


  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a program manager in relevant non-profit organizations. Previous experience in a non-profit media development organization is a significant asset.
  • Previous work experience with USAID programs and projects is a significant asset.
  • Experience in program development or support.
  • Relevant university degree required.
  • Excellent writing skills and proven proficiency in copywriting.
  • Experience with the media a strong asset.
  • Experience with the Africa region.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including diplomacy, tact and the ability to negotiate.
  • Excellent communication skills: speaking, writing and listening.
