D’Andre Swift has set big goals for 2022 and Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson plans to help him achieve them.

Lions running backs coach Duce Staley has challenged D’Andre Swift to play through minor injuries and reach a new level in his third season. In response, Swift set a lofty goal of being in historic business with 1,000 rushing and receiving yards in the same season.

As captured at times on “Hard Knocks,” Staley has made it his personal mission to squeeze Swift’s potential out of him. For her part, Swift seems to have reacted, and Staley likes the lofty goal.

Via Lions.com’s Tim Twentyman on Friday, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson laid out a plan for Swift.

How many different ways can we give him the ball?” Johnson said of Swift. and give the ball to the other guys.

“But I mean, he’s going to open up the rest of the guns on that offense because we know any time he gets the ball in his hands he can make a good play and score touchdowns.”

Given how good a receiver he is, using Swift in the slot or setting him on the move, some seem like ideas Johnson is entertaining without a full reveal. Overall, Pro Football Focus’ recent total yardage projection could be a low point. PFF may have integrated a missed game or two?

Swift is shaping up to be the biggest x-factor for the Lions offense this year. He is the only player who can be considered among the best pure talents in the league in his position and change the way defenses do things. The technical staff clearly believes in its potential. It is up to him to deliver.
